The esteemed department was designed to provide clinical education and experience to medical students while broadening access to lab services throughout Northern Nevada and eastern California.
The Department of Pathology along with Aurora Diagnostics not only offers exceptional medical education to students, but a fully functioning lab, consultation from specialists and courier lab service to local physician offices, area hospitals and rural communities. The collaboration with Aurora Diagnostics was a welcomed relationship as it brings a network of over talented pathologists to review local medical conditions.
Not only does it add to the breadth of knowledge students receive, but it also allows School of Medicine scientists access to human tissue through Aurora's Research Institute. This will continue to provide a number of incredible research opportunities for the school.

General pathology, organ pathology and laboratory medicine are incorporated in courses that focus on the pathophysiology of diseases.The long-term goal of Dr. Duan's Laboratory of Cardiovascular Phenomics is to determine the molecular mechanisms for the functional role of ion channels in the cardiovascular system in the context of health and disease. Ion channels are membrane-spanning proteins which form pores for ion permeation and are the major catalysts of many biological functions.
Activation of ion channels can produce significant effects on cardiac electrical activity automaticity and action potential and contractile function excitation-contraction coupling. In addition, ion channels are important regulators of acidification of intracellular organelles, cell volume, proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Ion channels interact with many partners and function as an integrated "ion channel module" or "channel protein complex".
Under pathological conditions "ion channel modules" often undergo remodeling and provide substrates for cardiovascular disease such as cardiac rhythm and contraction disorders and hypertension. Therefore, the study of ion channels has important significance in the translational medicine for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

These pieces of equipment allow us to analyze human gait, posture, and vision from a biomechanical perspective. This facility is partnered with the University of Nevada, Reno sports-medicine, and numerous community affiliates to provide baseline and post-injury assessments of sport-related concussion which include clinical- and laboratory-based assessments.
Our research team is comprised of a multidisciplinary team that spans sports-medicine, kinesiology, and neuroscience which enables us to evaluate most neurological disorders. Please contact us if you have need of any baseline or post-injury evaluations.

Lauren is a first-year doctoral student in the integrative neuroscience program. Her research efforts combine both kinesthetics and cognition to study performance in athletes with concussions. Previously, she completed her MS in neuroscience at Creighton University, where she utilized electroencephalography to study neural biomarkers of proprioception and helped to develop a novel, patent-pending device that, when placed anywhere on the body and calibrated to specific movement patterns, can deliver auditory and tactile feedback while recording various kinematic values.
With the combination of these technologies, she was able to study baseball pitcher development and subsequent neural correlates.
Her BS in neuroscience and psychology was also completed at Creighton University where she studied respiratory biomarkers for sudden unexpected death in epilepsy. She found an increase in specific inflammatory markers that were decreased through the use of specific metabolic therapies, such as the ketogenic diet. As a former collegiate athlete, Lauren still loves to workout in her free time and, notably, has been hiking and spending extra time at Lake Tahoe since her move to Western Nevada.
Maddie is a first-year graduate student in the integrated neuroscience program. She received her BS in kinesiology in and then joined the Neuromechanics Lab full-time as a doctoral student.
